Evaluation: “In our culture there is no place for a women”

“In our culture there is no place for a women” Through our research, we discovered that in Asian countries feminism is known as a taboo subject and has not been well recognised nation wide. After some idea development, we decided to find some resourceful ideas online such as Wikipedia to develop our ideas of Asian feminism . However, doing this did not feel as though we were creating an authentic, innovative piece of instillation, so we decided to be ambitious, going a step further and finding real Asian feminist groups.Using actual resources such as the feminist library, Gabies mother and Facebook groups in Asia gave the piece a much more authentic feel, and helped us to better achieve what we originally set out to do – to highlight feminism in Asian culture, In addition, this also increased the enjoyment of the instillation making process for us as a group, as we felt a stronger connection to the topic and an excitement to see the results of our experiment.Through our instillatio...

Explanation of Instillation: “In our culture there is no place for a women”

Instillation:“In our culture there is no place for a women” Through our instillation we want to explore Asian feminism through all 48 countries  Why? Asian feminism is seen as a taboo subject Through our instillation piece we will include a baby's mobile: this will represent a child growing up in a feminist world of Asia. Through this there will be a variety of Asian countries dangling down in vibrant colours. Furthermore on top of the mobile there will be a base that will have research of feminism history in Asia.  Through this the audience will enter the child perspective as if they were growing in a feminist world.  Beneath the instillation there will be a bed were the audience are able to lay down and look above the instillation  We all also have a projection of spoken words by gabies mother who has experience abuse and her reaction towards feminism. This will create a more personal view for individuals watching this. This will be all translated in English...

Final Idea

Here are a few images of our instillation piece

Instillation set up : Day Two

Set up day two -We had to change the layout of our instillation  - We had to remove the centre of the mobile and place it in a different position -The projection on the wall didn't work as it was not out of placed however we positioned it on the bed and it looked very effective -We used one lighting however we wanted to use two as some elements of our instillation piece was dark  -We put the flat up Overall looked very effective however the only issue we had that the bed will draw all the attention rather then on the posters and mobile. we removed the centre

Instillation set up : Day One

Setting up Instillation  We hooked everything and found that the centre was out of balanced the audio was fine we had to attach the countries on to the mobile so that it would be balanced  We couldn't test the motor out as the plug is different to the light plug  Solutions  Either to remove the feminism base so that the doughnut ring will turn  we need a projection to see the words on the wall working out the layout of the piece. Solving lighting (space to dark)

3D Workshop: Day Five

Drilling holes on the base and applying hooks and rope wire with a jigsaw machine we took out the centre of our base  We used hooks and drilled them in on four sides we attached rope wire on the each hook we tested out the motor and balanced the base- (everything moved very well) Slightly out of balance therefore we had to make the rope tight a possible on the day of the crit

3D Workshop: Day Four

Drilling holes and attaching string on to the countries  we used acetate sheets for the smaller countries/islands

3D Workshop: Day Three

Laser Cut countries On illustrator I created a map which we wanted to laser cut.I had to trace the image in red so that the laser cutting machine will detect the red.  we also brought spray paint to for the countries. we also arranged the countries in order according to how we would like it to be hanged. We had to put on three countries on one string.

3D Workshop: Day Two

We used Asian newspaper and covered the base  We also but all our research on top of the base which we found at the feminist library

3D Workshop: Day One

Creating the top of the mobile Using a template to measure out the circle  Cutting wood  Cutting wood with jigsaw machine Completed  circle with template   sanding down edges Finding central point of the circle

Issues and solution : Motor

We have approached an issue with the motor 4 kg motor only in stock (our instillation) 10kg out of stock only had 50kg which was priced at £110 We talked to one of the staff members at  clubtek and explained our instillation piece as they worked in theatre and also with various instillation pieces. he told us to cut out the centre to make it lighter and use the 4kg drill holes into the wood recreate it and use polystyrene  or buy the 50kg which was priced at £110 From these options we decided to create a hole in the centre so the top would look like a doughnut shape and we would lower the centre on a different wire. we brought  the 4kg motor and decided to cut out the centre

Babys Mobile

-We are creating a baby's mobile with different Asian countries hanging down from it and on top we will put a base of feminist facts. -We want the mobile to be very child like hence including colourful colours -We want the mobile to spin ( we need to get a motor at least 10kg) -The bed would also be beneath the mobile so the audience would be able to sleep on it and look above.

Bed for Instillation

- Today in the Film studio I was able to find a bed which we were able borrow for a day as we asked permission from a staff member -The bed is to represent the child who looks up at the feminist mobile every night. -We want to put the audience members into the shoes of the child as they are able to sleep on top of the bed. -We also brought a  black cover which will be placed on top of the bed and we found two green pillows which will be placed on top of the bed. -We may or may not add Asian feminist books on top of the bed to represent reading books

Flats and Posters: Day Two

Flats and Posters  I created posters on Photoshop for the back wall which will make it more accessible for the audience to view the instillation rather then looking at the information which is on the mobile base.

Flats and Posters: Day One

Posters and Flats During our feedback we decided to include another element within our instillation piece.I wanted to create a a huge message board which represents the whole of Asia. This will include shocking statistics of Asian countries. The wall would also represent the child's bedroom to represent how he or she faces these facts everyday and therefore it will also remain.there just like a scar. I will be creating all of the Asian countries on Photoshop  The style will almost be like the guerrilla girls poster but in a different style.

Spoken Words (Projection)

Spoken words ideas  Through our instillation piece we decided to incorporate spoken words from gabies mother as her mother experienced violence during the age of 24 from her ex-husband. During a car journey we recorded  gabies mother explaining her experience of abuse. We wanted this piece to be natural rather then scripted as it wont be much more emotional and personal. Through this experience we gained alot of information regarding to feminism and hence we would like to project these words on the wall. Through this speech it included Indonesian words hence we both translated the words. To make the piece more impact-full we asked permission for gabies mum and herself we could mention them right at the end to make It the climax,"this was my mother" Our intial idea at first was to create our own speech however we did not do that as it was very difficult
